What's a bed without a mattress? Even in the Neolithic Era, people slept on improvised mattresses made of piles of leaves, grass, or straw covered with animal skin.

Ancient Persians were probably the first to use waterbeds by sewing goatskins together and filling them with water. The prehistoric mattress gradually evolved to the present day mattress as determined by function, the needs of people, as well as economic conditions.

Super King Mattresses -Size Confusions

The super king mattress is common in the U.K. and measures 72 inches wide and 78 inches long, similar to the regular king size in Asia. Its nearest counterpart in the U.S. and Canada is the California king with dimensions of 72 inches wide and 84 long. Elsewhere in the world, the sizes further vary.

What To Look For When Buying A Mattress:

1. Thickness
2. Firmness
3. Materials
4. Coils or no coils...
The thickness of the mattress is a fundamental factor that determines the level of comfort it can give. Depending on the size of the bed, the thickness of mattresses ranges from six inches to 18 inches. Normally, a smaller bed needs a thinner mattress, while a bigger bed needs a thicker mattress. A super king mattress with a thickness of 15 inches or more should be comfortable enough.

An equally essential factor to consider is the firmness of the mattress. Aside from comfort, people look for mattresses that suit their individual needs and lifestyle such as their health conditions and sleeping habits. For example, firm mattresses are preferred by stomach and a few back sleepers and soft mattresses are recommended for side sleepers, while averagely firm or soft mattresses are ideal for most back sleepers. A super king mattress is not a super king mattress if it fails to serve its super king sleeper well.

A mattress can be filled or padded with a variety of materials to make it soft and bouncy yet firm. Spring coils are commonly used by many makers because there are many types of coils available in the market such as: bonnell coils, marshall coils, encased coils, offset coils, and continuous coils. Mattresses can also be filled with air or water or padded with foam.

While a mattress can be directly set on the floor and still be comfortable to sleep on, it can be mounted on any of the following more commonly used foundations:

  • Box spring – It consists of a rigid frame containing heavy-duty springs. For a softer and bouncier mattress, most manufacturers add high-density block foams underneath the springs that can contribute to a more sturdy foundation as well.

  • Platform  Traditionally made of wood, it is actually a simple bed frame but is lower in height than a standard bed.

  • Grid – This foundation consists of steel and wood put together to form a firm and stable bed frame.

To make your super king mattress last longer, proper care and maintenance must be undertaken. It should be mounted on top of a firm base to avoid sagging. Your super king mattress should be flipped and rotated once every two to three months, and its base, at least twice a year. Avoid folding or bending the mattress as this can contribute to faster deterioration. Your mattress should not be soaked or wet washed because this may destroy the upholstery both outside and inside. Instead, it should be cleaned with a vacuum or with a safe and mild surface cleanser. Finally, once your mattress can no longer serve your purposes, it is time to replace it with a new one.
